Texas Company Cited $50K by Feds in Fatal Rig Accident

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has levied $50,000 in fines against a West Texas well service company after an oil rig explosion resulted in the deaths of three employees earlier this year. The three men, who were all related, were killed in the accident this past March as they attempted to install a blowout preventer, which would seal, control, and monitor the rig. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Mason Well Service, an oil and gas well servicing company based in Odessa, Texas, received citations for five violations of workplace safety regulations. According to OSHA, the company failed to prevent contact between flammable gases and liquids and an ignition source. Additionally, the workers were not provided with flame-retardant clothing or personal hydrogen sulfide monitors.

While the company is facing maximum financial responsibility for the accident, no amount of money will ever ease the tragic loss felt by the victims’ family and friends.
